Goal of the course
The goal of the course is to provide students with a general overview of the history, institutions and constitutional framework of the EU. While the main lectures focus on the theoretical underpinnings of EU integration, the practical classes aim to give students a better understanding of the principles underlying EU legislation and the relevant case law of the EU.
Content of the course
In the course of the semester the following topics will be covered on a weekly basis:
1) The development of European integration before Maastricht
2) The establishment and development of the European Union before the Lisbon Treaty. The Lisbon Treaty.
3) The European Council and the Council of the EU
4) The Court of Auditors, European Central Bank, European Economic and Social Committee, Committee of the Regions
5) The European Parliament and the European Ombudsman
6) The European Commission, comitology
7) Court of Justice of the European Union, Procedures before the Court
8) Competences and decision-making
9) Legal sources and the nature of EU law
10) EU foreign and security policy
11) Area of freedom, security and Justice
12) Human rights protection in the EU
Evaluation
The evaluation of the final exam will follow the five-scale grading scheme: excellent (5), good (4), satisfactory (3), pass (2), fail (1).
